A birding checklist, available at the informational Kiosk located near the entrance, includes a list of 179 species of birds that have been identified inside the boundaries of The Brenton Arboretum. The list of species was arranged in accordance to the Iowa Ornithologist Union checklist of Iowa Birds,1999. Terry Shepherd, practicing ornithologist, from Dallas Center,Iowa compiled the original list of birds during his weekly visits to the Arboretum from April 2001 to July 2002. The Birding Checklist has been updated since then and birders are encouraged to report new birds not currently on the list.
The Brenton Arboretum offers a variety of birds and bird habitats: open grasslands, savanna with small trees, wetlands, streams, ponds, thickets and brushy areas. These habitats provide a niche for a wide variety of birds. From a wide variety of sparrows, warblers and finches to herons, hawks and waterfowl the Arboretum is a good place to observe and learn about birds.
