Width:
20-35'
Hardiness Zone:
2
Exposure:
Sun
Origin:
North America

Description:

Black Ash is a medium sized tree with an upright-oval form. It has pinnately compound leaves with 7-11 leaflets. The foliage is dark green during the summer, turning yellow-gold early in the fall. Often found growing in damp, boggy sites in the wild, Black Ash’s chief asset for landscape use is its ability to grow in poorly drained sites.

Site and Cultural Requirements:

Fraxinus nigra ‘Fallgold’ Black Ash is very cold hardy. It prefers ample soil moisture and will tolerate periodic flooding. Not tolerant of severe drought.

Insect/Disease Issues:

No serious insect problems. Black Ash’s susceptibility to ash yellows is unknown.

Cultivars:

'Fallgold'– a seedless selection noted for long lasting bright yellow fall color.

Related hybrids:

‘Northern Gem’ – (Fraxinus nigra x F. mandshurica)-hardy shade tree with oval-rounded form.

‘Northern Treasure’ -(Fraxinus nigra x F. mandshurica) – narrower, upright form
