Little Leaf Linden
Tilia cordata
Height: 40-60'
Width: 30-40'
Hardiness Zone: 3b
Exposure: sun
Origin: Europe
Description:
Littleleaf Linden is a popular, medium sized landscape tree. It has smaller leaves and a more dense growth habit than American Linden. Form is pyramidal to oval, becoming broader with age. Leaves are dark green, turning yellow or yellow-green in the fall. The small, fragrant yellowish flowers appear in June. Littleleaf Linden is widely used as a street tree and for residential landscaping.
Site and Cultural Requirements:
Littleleaf Linden is fairly tolerant to a wide range of site conditions. It usually requires little maintenance. Transplants readily. Tolerates clay soils better than many tree species. Fairly tolerant of pollution. May require removal of suckers from the base of trunk.
Insect/Disease Issues:
Japanese beetle adults skeletonize the foliage in regions where the beetle is present.
Cultivars:
‘Fairview’ – has a broad pyramidal crown, but is not quite as dense and has a more informal appearance than many other cultivars.
‘Glenleven’ – grows vigorously, has larger leaves than typical for the species. Perhaps of hybrid origin. It has a broad pyramidal crown.
‘Greenspire’ – is an older, well known cultivar. It has a formal, symmetrically pyramidal crown.
‘Olympic’ – has a dense pyramidal crown and good growth.
Norlin™ – has a broad pyramidal crown. It grows rapidly and has good resistance to sunscald. Selected for its adaptability to the northern plains.
Shamrock™ – is a vigorous growing selection with a broad pyramidal crown. Less dense and a more informal form than ‘Greenspire’.
