AMERICAN LINDEN
Tilia americana

Height: 50-75’
Width: 30-50’
Hardiness Zone: 3b
Exposure:
sun or partial shade
Origin:
Eastern North America from southern Canada to Virginia and Alabama. West to eastern North Dakota, Kansas and Texas.

Description:

Large oval to round deciduous tree with rather large (4-6”) round to heart shaped leaves. Rapid grower. A good shade or specimen tree for large scale situations. Fall color is yellow. The small, fragrant flowers open in early summer. Flowers of Tilia species are very attractive to honeybees and related insects.

Site and Cultural Requirements:

Lindens prefer a rich, well drained soil with ample moisture but are fairly tolerant to a broad range of soil conditions. More tolerant of clay soils Tilia americana ‘Redmond’ than many tree species. Often sucker at base of trunk and require pruning to maintain a single trunk form.

Insect/Disease Issues:

No serious insect or disease problems in the upper Midwest but are quite susceptible to the Japanese beetle where they are present. Susceptible to leaf scorch in dry sites.

Cultivars:

‘Boulevard’-narrow pyramidal form, very symmetrical
‘Fastigiata’ -narrow upright form, broader with age
FrontyardTM (‘Bailyard’) -symmetrical oval form.
‘Redmond’ -has an excellent symmetrical pyramidal form. Twigs of current season’s growth are reddish. Often listed as a cultivar of T. x euchlora. It may be of hybrid origin.

We would like to thank the Landscape Plant Development Center and Minnesota Landscape Arboretum for the botanical information and photos.
