Description:
Sargent Cherry is an attractive small to medium sized tree noted for its outstanding pink flowers in early spring. Attractive, smooth, shiny bark with large white lenticels provides winter interest. Simple leaves are glossy green and develop excellent red-bronze fall color.Trees are broad oval form maturing to round-shaped. Pink, 1-1/2” flowers are borne in clusters in early spring before leaves emerge. Fruit is a small black cherry, which is eaten readily by birds. Sargent cherry makes a beautiful specimen or group planting.
Site and Cultural Requirements:
Sargent cherry requires well-drained, moist soils. It is not tolerant of compacted or poorly-drained soil.
Insect/Disease Issues:
This tree is suseptible to trunk borers.
Cultivars:
‘Rancho’ Narrow, upright form. 20-25’ tall by 5-10’wide. Dark-pink flowers.
‘Columnaris’ Narrow, vase shape. 20-30’ tall by 10-15’ wide.
‘Accolade’ Semi-double flowers. 15-30’ tall. Some salt tolerance.
