GREEN ASH
Fraxinus pennsylvanica
Height: 40-60'
Width: 30-50'
Hardiness Zone: 3
Exposure: sun,
light shade
Origin: Native from Nova Scotia to Manitoba, south to Florida
and Texas.
Description:
Green Ash is commonly used in the landscape due to its adaptability to stressful landscape situations. It is very cold hardy and has excellent tolerance to drought, and is very adaptable to a wide range of soil conditions. It has an oval to round crown becoming more open and irregular in form with age. Trees grown from seed are quite variable in shape and often have very asymmetrical branching and poor crotch angles. Cultivars selected for superior form are most often used in landscape situations. The medium green leaves are pinnately compound with 7 to 9 leaflets. Fall color is often non-descript but can become very attractive clear yellow under good conditions. Green Ash is a fast grower especially when conditions Fraxinus pennsylvanica ‘Patmore’ are favorable.
Site and Cultural Requirements:
Well adapted to a wide range of soil conditions. Very drought tolerant and good tolerance to deicing salt. Easily transplanted and rapidly becomes established. Select seedless cultivars to avoid weedy seedlings.
Insect/Disease Issues:
Usually not seriously bothered by insect or disease problems. Can be attacked by borers if under stress. The Emerald Ash Borer, recently found in areas in Michigan and Ohio is a concern. Ash yellows (a mycoplasma-like organism) has shown up more frequently in recent years. Ash flower gall formed on male flowers can be unsightly. Ash plant bug can cause the foliage to become pale.
Cultivars:
‘Bergeson’ – has an upright oval crown with a straight trunk. Very hardy seedless cultivar
Dakota CentennialTM -has a symmetrical rounded crown with a strong central leader. Has dark green foliage, is seedless and very hardy.
‘Marshall Seedless’ – has a broad oval to round crown with dark green foliage. More irregular in branching habit with age than some cultivars. Good fall color when conditions favorable.
‘Patmore’ – has attractive glossy, dark green foliage and an oval crown with symmetrical upright branching habit. Seedless and very hardy.
‘Summit’ – has a narrow, upright oval crown broadening with age. It has a strong central leader. Bark is finer textured and distinctly different than most cultivars.
Prairie Dome TM -has a dense oval crown becoming globose with age. It is seedless and very hardy.
Prairie Spire TM -It grows rapidly with a compact, broad columnar to narrow pyramidal crown. Good yellow fall color, seedless and very hardy.
