Description:
Redosier (Red Twigged) Dogwood is highly desired for its winter twig color. Winter stem color is predominately red but cultivars with yellow stems are available. It is a large, many branched shrub. Fall color is attractive ranging from yellow-orange to deep purple depending on the cultivar. Flowers are small, white and borne in flat clusters 2-3’ across. Fruit is grayish or bluish-white and readily eaten by birds.
Site and Cultural Requirements:
Redosier Dogwood is tolerant to a wide range of soil conditions. It is quite tolerant of poorly drained soils and also has fairly good drought tolerance once well established. It is not tolerant of hot dry conditions.
Insect/Disease Issues:
No severe pest problems. Some plants are prone to leaf spot diseases.
Cultivars:
‘Alleman’s Compact’ – compact plant habit to 6' with
red winter stems Forma Baileyi – dark red winter stem color.
Fairly resistant to leaf spot. Has blue tinted fruit. More erect habit.
‘Cardinal’-was
developed for its bright, cardinal red winter stem color.
Fairly resistant
to leaf spot diseases ‘Flaviramea’ – has
yellow winter stem color. It has poor or no fall color.
‘Isanti’ – has
fine texture and a more compact plant habit maturing at 5-6'. Winter stem color
is reddish purple.
‘Kelseyi’ – very compact growth habit to
2'. Fine texture stems and leaves. Winter stem color deep purple. Very
susceptible to leaf spot.
‘Silver and Gold’ -has variegated foliage with silver edge and green center. Winter stems yellow.
