Description:

Catalpa is anupright, oval, irregular som etim es opencoarse-textured deciduous tree with large heart-shaped leaves, 6-12”longand 6-10” wide;thickstem s and branches. Flowers, inupright pyram idal clusters, are purple-spotted white and slightlyfragrant inearlysum m er. Long, thinseedpods (capsules), 10-16” long, oftenreferred toas bean-pods, are greenat first changingtobrown and hangverticallyonthe tree intoor through winter.

Site and Cultural Requirements:

Verytolerant ofdiverse site conditions ofsoil pH, drought, heat and som e com pactiononce established.Grow best in w ell-drained, m oist fertile soils with neutral pH;Catalpa has survived diicult urbansite conditions, how ever, shedding large leaves and seedpods onstreets and sidewalks m aycause slipperyconditions requiringfrequent autum ncleanup.

Insect/Disease Issues:

Num erous insects and diseases aect Catalpa, but none usuallycause a serious threat.

SouthernCatalpa (Catalpa bignonioides)-sm aller tree growing40-60’with sm aller leaves;zone 5.
