Pre-K through 2nd grade:

The Knee High Naturalist Program won awards in 2011 from Trees Forever and The Iowa Urban Forestry Council. These activities support basic science concepts and emphasize the enjoyment of spending time outdoors in nature.

After dividing into small groups, our Arboretum
instructors lead children to outdoor treasures like wildflowers, bird nests or animal tracks. Divided into small groups of 10 to 12 students, everyone can make a discovery of their own.

Each small group activity lasts about 40 minutes and an average school group participates in 3 or 4 activities. Field trips are usually 3 hours in length depending on the number of activities and number of students.

Most school groups schedule time for a picnic lunch at our green-roof pavilion.

Nine of the 15 program activities are available in the Program Guide below. Teachers are encouraged to request activities that match classroom studies.

Download the PDF version of The Knee High Naturalist Program Guide. Adobe Acrobat Reader® is required to view this document.

4th through 6th grade:

A new schedule of activities is in process. These field trips will meet Iowa Core Curriculum and National Life Science Standards. We also want questions, comments, and other input from teachers. Complete a Teacher Interest Survey, available here, and email it to Lee Goldsmith. We will use your input to design programs and prioritize interests. Thank you.

7th through 12 grades and collegiate students:

Please contact the Arboretum to arrange appropriate activities. We delight in working with classes at all ages and ability levels.
